Green Is the New Black

When most people think of organic products, it is usually food or personal skincare that initially comes to mind. But at this critical time of wayward environmental changes, we need to also start considering how other products are being made, notably in the apparel industry. Therefore, this year for Earth Day, I will be channeling my Marie Kondo & spring clean my wardrobe of unsustainable items that do not bring me joy!

Since my first collaboration with the eco-friendly athleisure brand, prAna, I have become more mindful of where my clothing comes from. Their mission on sustainability starts with the safety & well-being of their workers. The company ensures zero exposure of harmful chemicals & uses environmentally responsible materials. This is their promise in offering Fair Trade Certified™ clothing. I am excited to work with prAna again in promoting their new Spring 2019 campaign & helping to spread the word on ethically made fashion. Here I review the Oday Jean, Sugar Beach Sweater, & Pennington Jacket, all from the prAna organic cotton collection!

Cotton With a Conscience

Organic cotton differs from conventional grown cotton such that it significantly reduces water & energy usage. Most organic crops are rain fed, putting less pressure on local water sources. The soil prep requirements for organic farming regenerates biodiversity & even increases the water holding capacity within the land. What’s more, toxic pesticides & GMOs are not utilized in their production. This ensures the protection of farmers, factory workers & ultimately the consumer from any harmful chemicals.

“Replace one conventional cotton tee with an organic cotton tee, & you save 115 gallons of water.

That’s the same amount of water as letting the average shower run for nearly an hour.”

prAna Oday Jean

I love my prAna Oday Jean! The high-rise, skinny fit is very flattering & its stretch denim hugs you in all the right places. Made of a lightweight organic cotton blend, these jeans are soft to touch yet very durable. Their versatility allows me to easily transition from a morning coffee date to an afternoon visit to the local nursery! As with many other prAna pants, the Oday Jean comes in different inseams for the perfect fit. The Indigo color I am wearing is a beautiful dark blue & so far its color has maintained well, even through several washes! I just hope prAna will come out with other colors soon because I absolutely love these jeans!

prAna Sugar Beach Sweater

Paired with my new jeans is the cozy prAna Sugar Beach Sweater. Also made of organic cotton, this all-season pullover hoodie is perfect for running errands around town. Its lovely crochet pattern & handy kangaroo pocket provides enough style for casual photoshoots in the outdoors as well. I especially love that its thick & long enough in the torso to keep my bum covered. This makes the Sugar Beach Sweater ideal for layering over yoga gear or swimwear.

prAna Pennington Jacket

To top off my organic cotton style is the military-inspired prAna Pennington Jacket. Blended with stretch woven canvas, this rugged yet soft cargo jacket can be dressed up or down. It is adaptable to keep you warm through cool spring days into chilly summer nights. What’s great is the internal waist drawstring that adjusts for a more tailored look, which I prefer as it provides a slimming effect. It also features several functional pockets to hold all my essentials such as cell phone, wallet, keys, & lip balm!

Other Ways to Go Green in Fashion

  • Use green laundry detergent that does not contain harsh chemicals which can be harmful to our planet. If you want to save energy, try washing your clothes in low heat & hang it out to line dry instead. The typical washing machine uses 45 gallons of water per load. So for those who want to go further in washing responsibly, consider which items can be hand washed in the sink.
  • Statistics show that Americans produce more than 15 million tons of used textile waste every year. Approximately 75% of that number ends up at the landfill, with the average consumer throwing away 80 pounds of used clothing! Prevent the ongoing pileup of our landfills & recycle your unwanted clothes. You can donate to second-hand stores or charitable organizations like Goodwill & the Salvation Army.
  • Put a stop to “fast fashion,” which is a term for clothing that cycles quickly from manufacturing to its purchase. While cheaper in price, these clothes still add up to a huge detrimental cost. Speedy production of fast fashion can result in the quicker decline of our environment. Because of its poorer quality, it will most likely end up in the trash sooner too.
  • Invest in timeless pieces that are easy to transition from one season to another, so you are tossing out less. The prAna Sugar Beach Sweater, Oday Jean, & Pennington Jacket are perfect examples of clothing I can wear in any weather & for all types of activities! These organic styles will never get old!
